Making a follower or "pet" for a character

I'm currently working on a character mod, for this character I wanted one of his starting items to be a Bee, but then I thought it'd be more interesting if this Bee was special, something similar to Bernie or Wendy's Flower.

The main thing I want is for this Bee to act as a follower, it can be carried on the inventory, but dropped to have it follow the character and sometimes provide honey. And I know this is possible, but it might be complicated and is only an optional feature, like a stretch goal. But I'd also be interested in knowing how to make this follower act differently based on the player's sanity. Again, similarly to Bernie, where the Bee would normally be calm and follow, as the player's sanity lowers, it'd go around the player erratically in circles.

It's supposed to be a character specific item as well, where like Lucy, it wouldn't go into other player's inventory, or follow them.
